Q. I'm not really sure if Scouting is for us. How can I know for sure?
A. Contact us! We have many ways to give you a sample of what our program has to offer. We can arrange opportunities to observe activities or connect you to other families that may be in a similar situation.
Q. How do I sign up?
A. You can fill out the APPLICATION online, but please also reach out so we can personally help you get started.
Q. Does Pack 65 admit girls?
A. Yes! We welcome girls to join Pack 65. They will learn from the same program, earn the same awards, and achieve the same advancements that boys earn.
Q. I'm not familiar with some of these terms: Den, Pack, District, Council... what do they mean?
A. The Boy Scouts organize within a hierarchy starting with a National office. Below that is a Council. We reside within the Adventure West Council (formerly Longs Peak). Then councils are divided into Districts. We reside within the Wapiti District. Next districts are broken down into Units. Units can take various forms depending on the programming, but elementary students fall into Cub Scout packs. Lastly, packs are divided by student grade level so that we can focus our program to individual ages. Those grade-level groups are called Dens.
Kindergarten: Lion Den
1st Grade: Tiger Den
2nd Grade: Wolf Den
3rd Grade: Bear Den
4th Grade: Webelo Den
5th Grade: Arrow of Light Den
Q. How often do you meet?
A. Scouts in Pack 65 meet twice a month as Dens (just their own grade) on the 3rd and 4th Tuesday of each month. The meetings start and end as a whole Pack, with Opening Flag Ceremony, Scout Oath, Scout Law, and Pledge of Allegiance and then breakout into individual dens to work on programing, finally, we will close the meetings as a whole pack, retiring the flags for the evening. The Pack Meetings, without Den breakouts, meets once a month on the first Tuesday.
Q. What kind of activities can I expect?
Some Pack 65 activities include community service projects (age appropriate), camping, volunteering, hikes, banquets, and the annual Pinewood Derby! We also participate in fun local community activities like Christmas caroling, the Longmont Holiday Parade, and holiday Flag Planting to honor veterans.
Q. How involved do parents/guardians need to be?
A. Parent/guardian involvement is definitely the key! You will be active with your son or daughter in most meetings and events. It's also family friendly: siblings or other family members are welcome to attend any meeting/event. This is not a drop-off organization, at least one parent/guardian should come to every meeting along with their son or daughter, and this is required for Lion's (Kindergarten) at all meetings and events.
Q. What does it cost?
A. One-time registration costs $25 + prorated dues. The annual dues for Pack 65 are currently $120, which covers district/council costs as well as a subscription to "Scout Life," (Cub Scout magazine). If your scout hits a modest goal during our annual popcorn fundraiser, all of his or her dues will be waived! Other materials to purchase separately include: a handbook and uniform available at one of the Scouting Stores.
